Today is the most depressing day of the year. Pseudo-science types monitored sentiment on social mediaand found that the first Monday back to work after the Holiday supposedly ranks as the crabbiest day of the year.
Think about it; you've returned to the 9-to-5 routine, college bowl games are over, the Christmas tree is on the curb, and the weather sucks. In fact it sucks more than ever today given the fact most of the country is breaking records for arctic temperatures. My friends and family in Minnesota are suffering at around -50 today with the wind chill. Add all of this up and what do you get? The most depressing day of the year. But does it have to be?!
There's no denying the fact that even the most positive of people still feel a little of the post holiday blues but if you were miserable on the drive in today and are now mindlessly scrolling through your news feed avoiding anything that looks like work, it might be time to check in with yourself because these are the kinds of days when you need a BIG WHY.
Why do you do what you do? I mean that literally. Stop reading this right now and write down on a piece of paper why you are doing what you're doing today. Why are you at the company you're at? Why are you in the profession you've chosen? It's the start of a brand new year, the start of what could be a BIG year for you but you better know your why.
Two things you can do if you're not sure of your WHY...
1. Check in with yourself. If you didn't get a chance to do some self-reflection over the crazy Holiday, do it now. Spend some time thinking about what it is that brings joy to your live. Where's your skill-set best suited to navigate this new world of work? Despite the naysayers of following your passion, I'm a big believer that the crossroads of your biggest passions and the worlds greatest needs is your sweet spot in the Universe. Make it your mission to find those coordinates.
2. Don’t wait for someone to pick you. Most people go through life doing exactly what’s expected of them, and waiting for people to pick them for things – for a job, for a promotion, for a good grade, for a spouse, the list goes on. If you are waiting for that, I have bad news for you. No one is going to pick you. So what do you do? You pick yourself. You give yourself permission to dream huge dreams and to pursue them. Do one small thing today that moves you towards that pursuit.
And if your manager...
1. Make sure you're checking in with your people. If you notice that today may be the most depressing day of the year for some of your team, check in and find out if there's alignment between their BIG WHY and the company's BIG WHY. If not, what can you do to help them make a change in the right direction for both them and the company.
Today doesn't have to be the most depressing day of the year for you. Today can be an incredibly exciting day as we kick off a brand new year. New adventures. New relationships. New client challenges. Big scary opportunities that will make you grow.
The best part is we get to choose.
